Assignment 1 Post 3: Modifications to Gestalt Images

Assignment 1 Revisions
Following tutor feedback I had a look at a couple of the images that I had submitted for Project 1: “Gestalt in Composition”.

Image 2: Arable Fields

My tutor commented that there may have been some over-sharpening in post-processing. Generally I use a little sharpening for all my images and it is unusual for an image to appear over-sharpened. I decided to repeat post processing for this image but without sharpening, then to look for differences in the “blown up” images. Identical small segments of the images are shown below, with the sharpened segment first (Image 1) and the unsharpened segment second (Image 2).

There is a clear difference in sharpness between the images (most obvious by looking at the paler grass). However, I am not sure that the original image (Image 1) is over-sharpened: perhaps apparent over-sharpening may be caused by the myriad clods of soil reflecting light in different directions, resulting in a lot of tiny white spots. Anyway, I should be careful not to over-sharpen images in future (or indeed sharpen them at all), especially when the subject matter contains a great deal of texture.

Image 3: Feeding the Birds, Broomfield Park
My tutor didn’t like the composition of this image and I found it rather cluttered. I therefore used “Photoshop Elements 8” to make some changes to the image. The litter bin and four of the birds were removed from the original image (Image 3, below) to give a somewhat simpler, less cluttered result (Image 4). Image 4 still conforms to the various Gestalt laws, but in a clearer way. Even so, it’s still not a photograph that I would hang on my wall! The modified image will be submitted, along with the original, for assessment. See if you can spot the five differences between the photographs!

Major Project and Critical Review Proposals
Following the feedback I made minor changes to these proposals: the resultant final proposals will be submitted for assessment.
